Morals V. Strict Laws

Updated: Sep 18, 2020

At a place called the Rikers Island prison center at New York which is home to NYC main jail complex. Various people like Jan Ransom and Alan Feur, respected New York Times journalists have delineated that the sanitation at this jail is a "complete disaster" and therefore health and sanitation is compromised. It has lead to a very predictable infection, the Coronavirus. Yes, social distancing is not possible in a place where there are hundreds of people in a compact cell. Hygiene is also not maintained. One of the prisoner also informed us by saying that there are humans feces on the wall and the toilets and bathing places are shared by everybody. The question arises from the context is that, at what cost do we need to protect our public from these public offenders who are serving their imprisonment at this place? It is bewildering to answer this question as it is a perfect combination of morality and law. Mayor Di Blasio has taken further actions to free these jail inmates, as it would at least save them from worst sanitation and can decrease the chances of getting them infected with the Coronavirus. Right now, more than 160 inmates and 130 staff members have been infected with this virus. It is petrifying to imagine getting these vicious criminals and public offenders getting in the city with very high probability of damaging our communities during this global crisis. This topic is highly debatable and couldn't have a consensus. But think about the variety of issues everyone has to face globally due to Coronavirus. It is opening all sorts of enfeebling situations which we all have to face together.
