COVID-19 takes a huge leap in India

A month ago India only crossed the 50,000 cases of COVID-19, but at present, the number of coronavirus cases stands beyond 300,000 with Maharashtra the worst affected state. The number of cases in Maharashtra is now beyond the 100,000 COVID-19 cases. India has recorded the highest single-day jump so far of 11,458 additional cases and the death toll has crossed the 8,000 cases. Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra, Delhi, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, and Jaipur in Rajasthan are among the cities with the highest Covid-19 cases in the country. India is ranked the fourth worst affected country worldwide with the highest COVID-19 cases. There is more recovery than COVID-19 cases due to strict and critical measures taken by the Government Of India. However, as economic concerns force India to ease restrictions, the country may see an increase in coronavirus cases in the next few weeks. India is still experiencing a rise in the number of cases but still, the government has ordered to open essential as well as non-essential shops just for the sake of the economy’s growth. The mission ‘Unlock India 1.0’ has already begun which started June 1. But the worst affected states as mentioned earlier are still under lockdown. The main issue in India is that COVID-19 testings are only being done on symptomatic people or the people who only show symptoms of the coronavirus. There are strong measures taken by the government which has enforced testings regularly for the people who reside at lockdown sites.

Herd immunity which seems facile but the Ministry of Health of India has still doubted that herd-immunity will be effective to fight the COVID-19 cases. There is over 93 percent of the population of India which is below the age of 65 and might be effective for less COVID-19 cases and deaths but there are still questions on how promising Herd Immunity is. The union health ministry of India said that even herd immunity cannot keep you away from the virus since herd immunity needs infecting at least 82 percent of the population which seems impractical and can be tricky. And opening the country is just like welcoming the second wave of the virus at our doorstep.
